The Building
Etihad Arena opened in 2021 at the northern end of Yas Island, as the anchor of the Yas Bay waterfront development. It is an indoor hall holding about 18,000 people, and since opening it has carried combat sports, concerts, award shows and conferences.
Enclosed and air-conditioned matters more here than it would in a temperate city: it decouples the evening from the climate entirely. Whatever the date, the hall is the same temperature, and the weather only shapes the parts of the night spent outdoors — the walk in, the promenade, the wait for a car afterwards.
Where It Is, and How Far That Is
Yas Island lies between central Abu Dhabi and the mainland airport, connected by causeway and motorway rather than by rail. Two distances are worth holding on to:
- Zayed International Airport — around 15 minutes by road. The island is the closer of the two anchors, which makes the arena unusually easy to reach straight off a flight
- Central Abu Dhabi — roughly 30 kilometres, about half an hour outside event traffic
- Dubai — about 90 minutes by road, longer once an event night fills the return route
There is no metro or tram on the island, so every approach is a road approach, and that governs how the evening ends as much as how it begins.
Arriving and Getting In
Taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the island; give Etihad Arena or Yas Bay as the destination rather than a street address, which is how drivers know it. Coming by car, the island's motorway links run straight to the venue, and additional parking is opened for large events — the constraint on a sell-out night is the exit rather than the entry.
Entry is by mobile ticket presented at the gate, with security screening at every entrance. Travelling light shortens that queue more than anything else does. The practical rule on a single-night event is to arrive before the advertised start rather than for the match you came for, since the running order can move faster than expected.
Around the Arena
Yas Bay puts restaurants, cafés and the waterfront promenade within walking distance of the doors, so the hours before an evening event do not have to be spent waiting in a car park. The wider island adds Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and Yas Mall, all within a few minutes' drive.
Hotels sit both on the island and in central Abu Dhabi, and either works: the island keeps the return journey to minutes, while the city puts the Corniche, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Saadiyat cultural district on the doorstep instead. A major event lifts demand across the emirate, so booking early is worth more than choosing between the two.
November in Abu Dhabi
Mid-November is one of the easier months in the emirate. Daytime averages sit near 31 °C and overnight lows near 21 °C, with monthly rainfall averaging a few millimetres — enough that an umbrella is not part of the plan.
That affects the outdoor half of the night only. Inside, the air-conditioning runs cold by design, so a light layer is worth carrying even when the walk from the car does not call for one.
