What Real American Freestyle Is
Real American Freestyle is a professional league built on a single discipline: freestyle wrestling, the Olympic style in which both the legs and the upper body are legal to attack. It launched in Cleveland in 2025 and has run a numbered series of events since, broadcast on FOX Nation.
The league describes itself as unscripted, and the word is doing real work there. Matches are competition, not performance: the result is not agreed beforehand, nobody is booked to win, and an athlete can lose. That is the line between RAF and the scripted wrestling most people picture when they hear the word — a distinction worth knowing before you book, because the two produce very different evenings.
How Freestyle Wrestling Is Scored
A freestyle match is decided on points, and the scoring is written to reward attacking. Points come from taking an opponent down, from turning and exposing their back to the mat, from pushing them out of the circle and from penalties against them. A pin ends the match outright, and so does a large enough points gap — the rules stop a contest that has become one-sided rather than letting it run out its time.
That structure produces short, dense matches rather than long ones. An exchange that looks even can turn into four points in a second, and a lead built patiently can vanish just as fast. It also means the running time of any individual match is genuinely unknown in advance, which is why a card is published as an order of matches rather than a timetable.
Two wrestlers, one result, no bracket: the evening is a sequence of separate meetings, and the league calls that sequence a card. What is confirmed for Abu Dhabi appears on the schedule.
Who Competes in RAF
The league recruits from two directions. One is wrestling's own pipeline — Olympic and world medallists, and champions of the American collegiate system, where freestyle and its folkstyle cousin are the university sport that feeds everything above it.
The other is mixed martial arts. A large share of MMA fighters came up as wrestlers, and RAF gives them a way back to the discipline they started in, without the striking. That crossover is much of the league's draw: it puts athletes from two audiences on the same mat under one set of rules.

Why Abu Dhabi, and Why for Five Years
The Abu Dhabi night is not a tour stop. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the UAE Wrestling Federation signed a five-year agreement with the league, under which the emirate hosts a RAF event annually through 2031. The first of those is 14 November 2026 at Etihad Arena, with the opening match scheduled for 20:00 Gulf Standard Time.
For a buyer the length of that agreement matters more than it might sound. A one-off visit leaves nothing behind; a five-year commitment means a fixed slot in the emirate's calendar, a local federation involved in the event rather than merely hosting it, and a reason for the league to build its Abu Dhabi cards rather than assemble them.
